Please visit the Policy and Guidance section to access the revised version of the VARM Protocol.

The VARM process provides a framework for professionals to facilitate effective multi-agency working with vulnerable adults/adults at risk, 18 or over, who are deemed to have mental capacity and who are at risk of serious harm or death through self-neglect, refusal of services and/or high levels of risk taking activity.  This process and guidance should be used for discussing, identifying, assessing, recording, planning and reviewing the management of this risk, wherever possible in partnership with the adult at risk and with their consent.  This process applies in residential care and in the community and should be considered for use in health settings.
